Don’t panic! It’s not the end of the world!
Someone I was talking to on twitter the other day that had just released their blog told me that there were already instances on the internet of other blogs/websites that were using the same name as her blog.
Now some may blame her for not doing her research and looking up google to see if a name had already been taken. My argument to that would be that there are hardly any names in this day that aren’t taken. It’s just near impossible. It’s all about differentiating ourselves from the names we’ve been given or given ourselves.
I’m going to reveal something a bit personal here, but it’s no big deal. It may shock you to know that my name is actually ‘Daniel’. I cannot recall a year at school where I wasn’t in class with another ‘Daniel’. I was either called Daniel S. or ‘little Daniel’ as I’ve always been quite short in stature
The point I’m trying to make here is that everybody is unique. On the web, every website is unique. We all find ways to differentiate ourselves from others and make ourselves unique.
I’m a prime example. Like I said before my name is actually Daniel, which is a very common name for my generation. People call me ‘Sarge’ because my last name is Sargent. Although my name is still ‘Daniel’ I’ve managed to differentiate myself from the other Daniels and apart from my parents I don’t know anyone that calls me Sarge. I always introduce myself as Sarge.
What a lot of people do in the blogging world is if they find themselves with the same name or similar name as someone else they will put a slogan at the end of it. For example my slogan for Beginner Blogger is ‘Beginner Blogger – follow me on a journey as a Beginner Blogger’. So this may be something you can do to differentiate yourself from other blogs.
Even if you copied a website word for word, had the same design, your URL is still going to be different (so :p). No – I’m not saying you can do this, this is breaching copyright. But it is okay (in most instances) to have the same blog name as someone else. Why? Because I’m sure your blog goals and what you offer are completely different to what the other blog with the same name offers.
Yes there are plenty of other ‘beginner blogger’ blogs out there, some with the same or similar names. But my blog is my blog and I’m writing my own content which is totally unique to all other ‘beginner blogger’ blogs.
In my mind, unless you are using the name of someones blog that is trademarked you can call your blog whatever you please.
When I registered this domain I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it, and this was two years ago! It’s only been the last couple of months where I actually took some action and did something with it. I knew there were many other blogs out there that would be like this one, but I’ve got my own views and direction that I want to take this blog, which I’m sure you have with your own blog.
