- What text would appear on my twitter feed if I clicked it?
- Would it automatically appear straight away in my feed without getting a chance to edit it when I click the button?
- Would I get an option to edit the text?
So – What happens when you click on the tweetmeme ReTweet button?
1. A pop up box will display showing: RT @(authors_name) (page/blogpost title) http://the.url.com
Example: RT @beginnerblogger OMFG Just Stick To Your Goals!! | Beginner Blogger http://bit.ly/3mKxRl
2. You have the option to change the text as long as it remains under 140 characters. Make sure you keep the URL in there though otherwise it won’t register as a RT for that blog post.
3. Hit ReTweet and it will publish to your twitter account instantly and anyone following you will see this in their home feed, like all the other RTs you see on twitter every day.
So spread the love, if you find a blog post you really like and/or think it will benefit your readers hit that RT button – you know how it works now. No fear!
P.S. I would love your feedback on the video – I hope to produce more like this in future

Sarge, I bet you are feeling like a celebrity now that you have your own YouTube channel and everything! It’s a great feeling. I’m so happy that you decided to take the plunge. Are you using Blip.tv for distribution? Let me know so I can subscribe on iTunes. Great job.
Sarge,
I did know how the tweetmeme retweet button worked cause I have used it multiple times. But, I liked how you explained it for people that might not know what is really is. This video gives “newbies” a chance to really use the button/ feature.
I almost wonder if there should be a section on a blog that has how to use______. In that blank would be the share button, retweet button, etc.
One question I do have though for anyone is why do you use tweetmeme instead of Topsy http://www.topsy.com ? Currently TechCrunch uses Topsy retweet but many blogs like yours and Blogussion.com use tweetmeme.
Best Regards.
The benefit of using Tweetmeme over something like Topsy is that Tweet is arguably the standard of the industry. It has decent stat tracking and is simply more popular.
A large issue in my eyes with Topsy is simply that it’s seemingly search oriented, and offers no front page hub of popular topics.
Having an engine to search an already searchable site seems a bit off.. It’s like making a site that searches Google for you.
@Ileane – haha I wouldn’t say I feel like a celebrity but it feels good to get a video out there. Hopefully many more to come
Thanks for being a subscriber. I will have to check out blip.tv and I didn’t really consider publishing this to iTunes yet. I want to see what the response is to a few videos before I set anything in stone like a regular podcast but definitely something I have considered and would love to do.
@Derek – I do plan to have a place on my blog for a ‘how to use such and such’ I currently have a category for ‘how to’ and would love to create a bunch of these sorts of movies for people to look at for a reference if they’re not sure how to use it.
Topsy is interesting. It seems to function the same way as tweetmeme used to before it started using the popup feature instead of going straight to your twitter page.
@Brandon – You seem to know a lot about Topsy! I haven’t explored Topsy yet but I agree Tweetmeme seems much more industry standard, and not that I’ve used it much, it does have stat tracking available which would be a big plus.
Brandon,
That’s funny (a site that searches Google for you), and you make a great point about Tweetmeme being the industry standard. But since Google searches suck (many times) so I use Clusty or Addict-o-matic to search multiple resources at once including Google. Topsy is great for searches but Addict-o-matic is so much nicer.
Good video, Sarge! I did not know a couple of things about tweet-meme, and now I do. You sounded really good. Look forward to more videos!
Congrats on doing your first video, Sarge! I’m planning on doing one or two in the new year!
As for the tweetmeme button, that’s a nice insight you’ve given there. I would highly recommend everyone to not only install the plugin on their blog (to make it easier for people to tweet your blog post), but also use it! Since I’ve started RTing more articles, I’ve noticed a dramatic rise in the number of visitors I get sent by Twitter. It may be because I’m more active, it may be because people are tweeting back, I’m not sure… but it’s working so I’ll keep doing it!
@Farnoosh – Thanks for the feedback and really glad you got something out of the video
Hope to produce more like it!
@Simon – Cheers mate. Videos are a great way to branch out to a wider audience. Yeah I it’s important to educate your readers on the different tools you’re using on your site to encourage them to use them. Most of the time they’re used on other blogs as well so it’s better education for everyone.
Like I said in the post and video I wasn’t sure what the button did exactly when I first started out and if I had a video that told me exactly what it did from the beginning I would have started RT’ing a lot earlier!
Nice video! Which program do you use for the screen recording? I’ve tried a couple before and none of them really worked out that great.
(Btw, I finally got that first post out on my new blog
)
@An – I used ScreenFlow for the mac. Might use something else next time.
Screenr is something I may try using next (Thanks @Ileane for pointing me out to it!). It’s online, free and very easy to use. http://screenr.com/
Congrats on the first blog post (and thanks for mentioning me
)
Thanks, I have a PC so I checked out Screenr – super easy & works well! The only con is, seems like you have to publish the link on Twitter before you can download the file to embed on your site or upload to youtube. I’m sure there’s probably a way around that though…
An,
On Screenr you will see an option that says “don’t send tweet now will send later manually”. Hope this helps.
@Ileane
As soon as I saw the RT buttons for the first time I knew they were going to be huge. Everybody used to go for the Digg buttons but they didn;t really work unless they made the homepage. There are a lot of automatic tweets etc but the beauty of the Retweet button is that if you click in to a post and see that it has high double fiugure retweets then you have a fairly good idea that it is going to be a good post and well worth reading. I can see the Retweet homepage where the show the best of the stories becoming like a new Digg where people can surf the best stories from the web in an instant. The other thing to remember is that there are also some great stats for the publisher about how and why your story is getting retweeted. Winner all around I guess
@Niall – Is there a ReTweet homepage like digg where it shows the most retweeted tweets?
I recently signed up for an account at bit.ly which is great to see how many people are clicking on the links *I* tweet out as opposed to how many people are clicking on that link whether I tweeted it or someone else did.
I used to use hootsuite but people were saying they didn’t like the bar it used so I’ve switched to bit.ly.
Sarge,
I think it is my first time visiting your blog. Wish I’d know about you a long time ago. Very nice site and good content.
Your video tutorial was fantastic. I do these from time to time, but I’m a little less comfortable with recoding myself and usually end up sounding silly. haha BTW, what program are you using for screencasts? I like the zoom-in feature!
Thanks for entering my New Year’s giveaway!! And, Happy New Year!
@Erica – Thanks for visiting! Glad you enjoy the content – the goal this month is to produce more of that great content
That was my first video tutorial I’ve done. Ever. I was a little uncomfortable but hope to keep doing them as public speaking is a fear I’d like to get rid of and really improve in. So the videos are a great way to help me as well as helping you guys out
I use ScreenFlow for the Mac. It has screen/audio capture and editing all built into one. Pretty neat! I used a cheapy ‘easyman’ headset to record the voice.
