twitter-followers

Approximately!

As you’re probably well aware I have been focusing a lot of my attention on Twitter lately. As I write this I have 1,413 followers. The reason I’ve been focusing so much on twitter lately is because:

a) Twitter is one of the fastest if not the fastest social media site going around at the moment and
b) I want to be able to reach out to as many beginner bloggers/bloggers as I can. The more people I can help the better!

So with that in mind here is the method of how I managed to get 1000 twitter followers in 30 days and how you can do the same for your niche.

1. Post great valuable ‘tweets’ related to your niche

First and foremost. In order to get people to follow you, you MUST be posting great quality valuable tweets both related to your niche and that people will also enjoy. It’s all about the value of your tweets. If your blog is about hockey and all you’re talking about on twitter is about your garden then you’re going to fail at getting those hockey fans to add you to twitter! (Yes I know, very lame example but I hope you see my point ;) )

2. Search keywords on twitter based on your niche

Most twitter applications have the ability for you to search terms on twitter. At first I used Tweetdeck but over the last couple of months I’ve mainly used Hootsuite. Both of these applications allow you to search for keywords which give results from tweets all over the world.

What I did was brainstormed a whole bunch of keywords that suited my niche of blogging. Things like ’starting a blog’, ‘help with blogging’, ‘creating a blog’ etc. From these keywords I would find people using twitter that were tweeting about blogging that I felt that I could help or that they could benefit from my blog. I would add these people.

More likely than not they would follow me back. Why? Because I completed the first step of having valuable tweets in my twitter account (and also this blog) that they could benefit from.

3. Find a keyword or phrase that has a high success rate of people you are adding to twitter and use Buzzom.com add people more efficiently.

Once I had tested and tried out several keywords and phrases that I felt I was able to find people within my niche I then looked for the keywords/phrases that had a high success rate of people I was adding.

For example the phrase ‘new to blogging’ wasn’t really working out for me, I would add about 1/10 people from this category. That phrase seemed to have an awful lot of spammers and people I wasn’t interested in adding nor felt I could help. The phrase ‘create a blog’ however saw a much higher success rate. More like 8/10 from this category I would add.

Once I found a great phrase that generates a lot of good tweeters I used a twitter service called Buzzom. Buzzom allows you to search a keyword or phrase and add the last 50 people that used that keyword/phrase with the click of a button! This was a much more efficient way than adding people individually and why I was able to amass a great deal of followers so quickly.

Note that I made sure I chose keywords/phrases that had a high conversion rate of tweeters that would follow me back and not keywords where I would get spammers or people not interested in what I had to offer.

A huge thanks to @ileane for posting this great post about Buzzom.  I would not have had this many followers to this day if I weren’t exposed Ileane’s video and Buzzom :)

So that is how I have (approximately) 1000 targeted people following me on twitter in 30 days.

What are your methods of getting targeted twitter followers? I would love to hear!

Please use the comment box below. Ever since I’ve changed over to the Disqus commenting system my comments have gone down quite considerably. Please restore my faith in the system and let me know it’s working at least.. hehe ;)

Hi Sarge, I'm not sure if my comment went through the first time.
Thanks for the shout out! I'm glad that I could help. Now you have more followers than me! lol….

  2. Sarge on October 14, 2009 12:06 am

Hmm odd. Your comment went through that time. Maybe I will revert back to the old commenting system if people are having trouble with it.

What happened the first time you attempted to post a comment?

Btw – no worries about the mention – thoroughly deserved! :-)

The first time I tried to sign in as a guest. I missed the Twitter sign in link. Thanks again.

I was just looking at your twitter profile a few days ago and I wwas wondering how you got so many followers. I'm DEFINITELY going to really push and grow my twitter following this coming month.

1000 though, that's a lot and the most I got in 1 month was just over 200.

A very very interesting post especially about using buzzom. Thanks for sharing the tip Sarge.

Thanks for the comment Blaine :)

Yeah Buzzom rocks – I owe a lot to Ileane. It's important though if you are mass adding people that you still communicate with them. Some people may frown upon the idea of adding so many people at once but I feel it's justified because my success rate when I was adding people individually was really high.

I want to be able to reach out to as many people I can help as I can. If a few fall through the cracks that is ok, hopefully I catch a lot more though ;)

BTW I seem to be having a few problems with this commenting system – did you have to sign into twitter to make your comment or sign into Disqus?
I've received a couple of emails from people wanting to make comments on this post but they haven't been able to. Which is a shame, I really like Disqus on other blogs. Hopefully it's a simple fix.

Another way I have found useful is by using directories. In directories like Twellow and WeFollow, first I narrow down search to my niche and then go to profiles of top people. 70% chances are that they have 1:1 ratio or more. They usually auto follow. Just follow them and you will get followed by them + others who will see you in their list. However, they may not be that targeted! Just my 2 cents! :-)

I keep hearing about Twellow (not so much WeFolllow though). I’ll have to check these out. Thanks Mr. I :)

    Hi Sarge,

Thanks for the tips – I found this on digg, and it’s a good read. Try http://www.flashtweet.com out – would like to get your review!

    Hey Nicole,

Flashtweet looks good – just viewed the video. It might be something I try out next month depending on my twitter goals ;)

About your commenting system, I didn’t try with twitter. I used Disqus and it worked fine for me.

Also since using buzzom, im seeing great results and connecting with powerful twitterers. It’s a great tool.

I use a lot of different methods to find like minded connections on Twitter. One is merely going to the twitter search stream through a search. Another way I find friends (mutual followers) on Twitter is by using twellow. Hope that helps some.

    Sarge,
This is valuable information. I am bookmarking it and will try some of these techniques myself. I have been trying to figure out what I might be able to do with Twitter and this may be just the ticket.

I like Buzzom as well. This reminds me that I need to clear out who’s not following me and start following some new.

Sarge, lots of good information. Your tactics do work. I haven’t made to 1000 yet but then again I stopped messing around with twitter for a month or so. Now, I am trying to get back into the swing of things. Out of all of your tips the only ones I haven’t tried are the last two. I think I need to start doing that, and maybe I can pick up some new followers.

Good article Sarge. Thanks for the tips. If I may suggest Twitjump.com? It allows you to automatically follow and unfollow based on keywords. Right now it only allows 5 keywords, but it’s a pretty great tool in combination with Hootsuite. Keep up the good work!

    Nigel
