I went through pretty much all my direct messages the other day and thought I would share with you some of the suspected auto-DMs that I found EFFECTIVE.

Auto-DM’s that didn’t make me cringe thinking ‘oh, just an auto-DM’

Why did the chicken cross the Social Media Road? . . . .To Tweet of course! Thanks for following me & I look forward to Twinteracting with @JonneyJay

Thanks so much for following me on Twitter! It’s always nice to have new peeps to Twitter with! @lefinley

Thanks fur the follow! @mydeafcat
Note the name of the tweeter

Thank you for following me – much appreciated! If there was ONE tweet I could tweet about you or yr business, what would it be? Please DM me @iggypintado
Note: Although it was obvious the message from iggypintado was an auto-DM I still replied to him saying a bit about beginnerblogger. He then retweeted what I said to his entire list which is 13k+ followers.
The message he sent was: Meet Sarge from @beginnerblogger who is helping bloggers and beginner bloggers alike achieve success.
The result of that message was a lot of people adding me to twitter and even a few new subscribers to the blog. I had quite a few conversations on twitter as a result of that message and was able to help out a few people as well.

Wow-Thanks! I’m going to assume that you’re not lost & that you meant to follow me. Much appreciated! You won’t regret it. Well…hmmm. @TriciaAbney

Hi. This is it. The one & only automated DM message from me via Socialoomph.com. Congrats you found me! Now let’s talk like real people :O) @halfbakedseo

Hi there, open the door, let the sun shine in and welcome the new day. @affsaltra

Conclusions We Can Draw

Posts without links/selling that ask a question or get a laugh from me are most powerful.

I always suspect the first DM I get from a person is an auto-DM, even if it isn’t. So the worst thing to do is put a link in. Tell me about yourself or engage with a question. Get the conversation started!

Everyone says ‘look forward to your tweets’ or ‘thanks for following me’. Mix it up a bit – ask a question. I believe the best way to start a relationship with someone is to ask a question.

My one and only auto-DM you will get from me I try to engage with you. I try and and make them personal and encourage a response back so we can get the ball rolling.

Your Thoughts?

Do you auto-DM? Do you reply to DMs or click on links that are inside a suspected DM? Do you totally ignore suspected auto DMs? What are some great suspected auto-DMs that you’ve received? Let everyone know in the comments below!

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of twitter followers which is great, but I’m not always going to follow you back. I have my own personal guidelines and preferences for following people back. This got me thinking – What do other people do when they’re deciding to follow people on twitter?

So what do you do when someone starts following you?

Do you auto-follow people?

Do you have email notifications when someone adds you to twitter turned on or off?

Do you immediately engage with the person that adds you on twitter or just add them?

Do you have an Auto DM message set up when someone adds you?

What are your personal reasons why you would add someone?

My following guidelines/preferences

I get emails of people when they add me to twitter. I check out the twitter page of EVERY person that adds me. To be followed back I will make sure they’re a real person on twitter and not an automated machine just posting links with no interaction with others what so ever. If they have a picture of themselves and link to a blog and are conversing on twitter – then you’ll be added.

The perfect combination is:

You’re into blogging and/or have a blog

You interact with others and don’t just pop out links which obviously seems like it’s an automated account.

Personal unique image and background – Not one of those premade twitter ones. Personalise it.

That’s my approach when I see new people following me on twitter. What are yours?

It feels like Christmas morning, the stockings are filled, the owls are hooting… wait, did I just say the owls are hooting? Well yes I did!

Hootsuite is out on the iPhone! Christmas has come early!

Hootsuite the Web Application

If you’re not already familiar with Hootsuite it is a web-based twitter account manager that is very much similar to tweetdeck. Hootsuite has the added benefits of displaying stats (when someone clicks on your links) and the ability to schedule tweets.

Hootsuite recently came out with an update that integrates facebook, facebook fan pages, linkedIn and ping.fm accounts. You can pretty much manage any social media site from within the Hootsuite web application. So if you’re not already using hootsuite I recommend you at least try Hootsuite on the web now – it’s free.

Hootsuite the iPhone Application

Hootsuite came out on the iPhone today. After playing around with it for the last hour or so I am very impressed. It’s fast, reliable (I haven’t had a crash yet) and lets you can manage your (perhaps multiple) twitter account on run.

Here’s a list of features for the iPhone version:

•	Customizable user interface with sortable tabs and columns
•	Easy navigation thanks to column swiping
•	Schedule tweets
•	Update multiple accounts at once
•	Save searches
•	Track statistics
•	Share photos
•	Import lists
•	Explore trending topics

Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be any facebook, linkedIn or ping.fm support for the iPhone version. But I have no doubt it will be available in a future update – at least I’m hoping so!

Also you can only view stats in per-tweet on the iPhone and not a set time-frame view like you can on the web, but this is minor. I do find looking at per-tweet stats on the iPhone version much quicker and easier than the web-based version.

I would have paid $10+ for this application but it only costs $1.99 US.

In contrast to my How I Got 1000 TARGETED Twitter Followers In 30 Days blog post, I wanted to write about how you can get yourself twitter followers without the need to go out and add people yourself. Granted, you probably won’t get as many followers than if you went out and followed as many people as possible using services like Buzzom, but I believe if people voluntarily add you to twitter than those people are much more valuable to you. They went out of their way to add you, so as long as they’re not a spam account, you must be doing something right!

Here are my top 5 ways you can increase your twitter following without begging for one:

1. Provide valuable tweets

First and foremost, the main reason anyone would want to add you to twitter is because you provide great tweets. You won’t find yourself with many followers if you have an empty twitter account with no tweets. You’ll also find yourself lonely if you provide meaningless updates like ‘at the shops’, ‘lunch was yum’, ‘walking home’ etc.

Picture this – you’ve just started a twitter account and you’ve been focusing solely on creating great quality tweets. Suddenly someone finds you through search.twitter.com (or something like this) that likes what you’re saying about that certain topic. This person that just added you has over 1000 friends. He ReTweets one of your tweets which is broadcast to the 1000+ on that persons list. Those 1000+ people can then follow you on twitter or ReTweet your message again to their list, which may be broadcast to even more tweeters out there.

This is why the quality and value of your tweets are so important. Provide great quality and value and you’re sure to attract many many people.

2. Engage with your audience

Don’t go on autopilot. Don’t create one of those spam accounts that just read out RSS feeds. Sure put some auto-RSS feeds on your twitter account if they relate to your niche or your purpose, but make sure you’re a person as well. People are more likely to recommend you to others willingly if you’re an approachable and engaging person on twitter.

There is a novelty on twitter on Fridays called Follow Friday (#FF or #FollowFriday) where people nominate people that they think everyone on their twitter list should follow. I’ve found that the people that recommend me for Follow Friday are the ones I have engaged with on twitter the most, some have very large twitter followings so I’ve generated a lot of followers this way.

A great idea is to make it a habit to send a message to every person that adds you to twitter that you are going to add back. Your relationship will improve dramatically this way than not interacting with them at all and them just being ‘another one to the list’

3. ReTweet valuable relative content

This is why I believe you should have a purpose/niche on twitter. If you have a clear purpose/niche people that are interested in your niche will follow you. If you ReTweet something related to your niche it goes to everyone on your list. So it’s of great benefit to have people following you that are interested in what you ReTweet.

ReTweeting also builds relationships. People love it when you ReTweet their tweets. So if someone tweets something you like and you think others on your list will enjoy ReTweet it because they might re-ReTweet it to others not following you and you may find yourself with more quality followers!

4. Follow those that are beneficial to you

Don’t just follow random people and don’t feel you have to follow people back if they follow you. You choose who you follow, no-one else. If people are thinking of following you they may check out who else you’re following. If you’re following a bunch of spam accounts and people tweeting unpleasant links or offensive content they may think twice before following you.

It doesn’t make any sense to follow someone that won’t gain anything from your twitter account – so don’t do it. Having 10 people that follow me that find my content useful, helpful and more likely to click on my links is much more valuable than 100 random followers that will ignore most if not everything I have to say.

5. Have a custom Twitter background, avatar, bio and preferably website.

You should fill these out before you even start tweeting. A bio and picture I feel is absolutely necessary and bare minimum to at least know you’re human. I would also change your background from the default blue/green background.

Personally I only add people that I feel are real people. I’m very picky now of who I follow now because I don’t want to follow those I’m not interested in.

A custom background, avatar, bio and preferably a link to your website is ideal. I always check out a website of someone before I add them to twitter. If it takes me to a sales page I probably won’t add you unless I’m impressed with your tweets and you’re not spamming.

To clarify – spamming to me is constant tweets that link off to sales pages and it’s obviously just a twitter account made to create money. I don’t want any part of that thanks.

Find your purpose

Make sure you find your purpose on twitter. I use @beginnerblogger mainly to help others with their blogging, provide valuable blogging tips I feel bloggers and beginner bloggers will gain value from and also from time to time put in the odd personal tweet. I make sure the personal tweets are not boring like ‘off to the shops’, I try and make them interesting too.

Something I’m going to do over the next few weeks is really go through my twitter list, engage with those I haven’t engaged with and unfollow the ‘unhuman’ twitter accounts that are of no benefit to me. I want to engage with real people. My struggle at the moment is that I am following too many people and it’s near impossible to keep up with everyone as much as I’d like.

Approximately!

As you’re probably well aware I have been focusing a lot of my attention on Twitter lately. As I write this I have 1,413 followers. The reason I’ve been focusing so much on twitter lately is because:

a) Twitter is one of the fastest if not the fastest social media site going around at the moment and
b) I want to be able to reach out to as many beginner bloggers/bloggers as I can. The more people I can help the better!

So with that in mind here is the method of how I managed to get 1000 twitter followers in 30 days and how you can do the same for your niche.

1. Post great valuable ‘tweets’ related to your niche

First and foremost. In order to get people to follow you, you MUST be posting great quality valuable tweets both related to your niche and that people will also enjoy. It’s all about the value of your tweets. If your blog is about hockey and all you’re talking about on twitter is about your garden then you’re going to fail at getting those hockey fans to add you to twitter! (Yes I know, very lame example but I hope you see my point )

Check out this amazing video by Darren Rowse – Twitter Tips for Beginners

2. Search keywords on twitter based on your niche

Most twitter applications have the ability for you to search terms on twitter. At first I used Tweetdeck but over the last couple of months I’ve mainly used Hootsuite. Both of these applications allow you to search for keywords which give results from tweets all over the world.

What I did was brainstormed a whole bunch of keywords that suited my niche of blogging. Things like ’starting a blog’, ‘help with blogging’, ‘creating a blog’ etc. From these keywords I would find people using twitter that were tweeting about blogging that I felt that I could help or that they could benefit from my blog. I would add these people.

More likely than not they would follow me back. Why? Because I completed the first step of having valuable tweets in my twitter account (and also this blog) that they could benefit from.

3. Find a keyword or phrase that has a high success rate of people you are adding to twitter and use Buzzom.com add people more efficiently.

Once I had tested and tried out several keywords and phrases that I felt I was able to find people within my niche I then looked for the keywords/phrases that had a high success rate of people I was adding.

For example the phrase ‘new to blogging’ wasn’t really working out for me, I would add about 1/10 people from this category. That phrase seemed to have an awful lot of spammers and people I wasn’t interested in adding nor felt I could help. The phrase ‘create a blog’ however saw a much higher success rate. More like 8/10 from this category I would add.

Once I found a great phrase that generates a lot of good tweeters I used a twitter service called Buzzom. Buzzom allows you to search a keyword or phrase and add the last 50 people that used that keyword/phrase with the click of a button! This was a much more efficient way than adding people individually and why I was able to amass a great deal of followers so quickly.

Note that I made sure I chose keywords/phrases that had a high conversion rate of tweeters that would follow me back and not keywords where I would get spammers or people not interested in what I had to offer.

A huge thanks to @ileane for posting this great post about Buzzom. I would not have had this many followers to this day if I weren’t exposed Ileane’s video and Buzzom

…

So that is how I have (approximately) 1000 targeted people following me on twitter in 30 days.

What are your methods of getting targeted twitter followers? I would love to hear!

Please use the comment box below. Ever since I’ve changed over to the Disqus commenting system my comments have gone down quite considerably. Please restore my faith in the system and let me know it’s working at least.. hehe

Well it did. A few nights ago I was in the middle of writing a ‘tweet’ through TweetDeck and it wouldn’t send. I thought there was a problem with the TweetDeck software perhaps. I kept hitting the send button enough times to finally realised it probably wasn’t the software, it may actually be a problem with twitter itself.

Now I am still relatively new to twitter, but I know enough about twitter to realise it’s a pretty big thing at the moment. So I thought I would search google and type the phrase ‘is twitter down’ thinking a news item might pop up telling me twitter was down. I figure given how big twitter is that there might be a news item out there somewhere with some breaking news saying it was down.

I didn’t quite get the result I wanted but (at the time) this website was no1. At the time it said ‘yes’ and if you clicked on the word ‘yes’ it would take you to a online shirt store where you could buy ‘twitter down’ t-shirts which I thought was quite clever. It turns out that twitter was in fact down so I imagine that particular site would have gotten a ton of hits.

The point of all this is that you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. This month my main social media focus has been twitter. At the time twitter decided to crash I had just written my latest blog post Beginner Blogger Stats and Goals – July-Aug 09 and wanted to use twitter to promote it. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to do this and didn’t have another form of social media set up anywhere near as big as I do with twitter.

So I ask you – Have you had similar experiences like this? Have you got all your eggs in one basket? If so it might be wise to seek other options in case something like this happens in future

I’ve been a bit slow, but I’ve finally entered the wonderful world of Twitter and must say it’s quite amazing. The bulk of my traffic for this site has been coming through the use of my twitter account. Having only just opened my account a few weeks ago I already have over 50 followers and am building relationships with those on Twitter. It’s a fantastic way to meet others that share the same interest with you and be able to interact and share information with them. I’ll show you how I’ve gone about my ‘twittering‘

Firstly I signed up to Twitter

This was very easy to do and took me 5 minutes tops . Go to www.twitter.com and sign up with an account. Easy.

Typed my first ‘Tweet’ (check out some of the lingo here)

I believe I said something along the lines of ‘I just set up my twitter account for my site beginnerblogger.com – exciting stuff!’ Later on that same day I had a couple of people ‘follow’ me. This means that they added me to their friends list and whenever I type a ‘tweet’ or type in a message they will see it in their account. I had the option of following them too, unfortunately they were spam account so I didn’t follow them. I figured if I’m going to have to find some (quality) people on my own to start with, without waiting for people to follow me. But how do I do this?

Downloaded TweetDeck for iPhone and desktop

This was the greatest thing I did. This is such a powerful Twittering tool. If you’re serious about twittering and you haven’t downloaded TweetDeck – get it now! TweetDeck allows you to create multiple columns – for example you can see all your friends tweets like you would at twitter.com in one column, in another you could have all your direct messages, in another favourites and so on.

It is because of TweetDeck that I was able to build such a strong following with just a couple of weeks and find people that I really want to communicate with. My method of doing this was to create a multiple columns of search terms like ‘beginner blogger’, ‘new to blogging’, ‘how to blog’ etc. TweetDeck will only show up the tweets in these columns that match up to the search term you entered. This allowed me to follow people that were new to blogging and starting out and thus allowed me to communicate with them. Fantastic! Just what I want to do, get closer to my target audience.

Did I mention that TweetDeck also manages multiple twitter accounts? Also on the desktop version you can manage your facebook account on TweetDeck as well! So again, if you’re serious about your twittering definitely download TweetDeck – you won’t regret it!

Of course there are many many other ways to use twitter, many different other twitter applications and much more about twitter than I probably even know at this point. If you haven’t already add me to twitter Happy twittering!!
